Basic Network Topologies:Bus, Star and Ring

Bus Topology

In this topology, the PCs are connected to each other using single cable segment connecting all computers in straight line theoretically. In case of Bus topology, the signal transmitted by a computer is propagated along the entire network. It is called broadcasting. Only the PC which is destination is able to accept the signal. The remaining PCs will be rejected. If one PC fails, there is no effect on the remaining network.

Star Topology

In this topology, the PCs are connected to each other using a device called ‘Hub’. Hub works as a central connection between the PCs. All PCs are connected to Hub and Hub provides way to communication between these PCs. Hub only provides the connection it does not control the communication. If one PC fails then there is no effect on other network.

Ring Topology

Ring topology network is created when a computer connected directly to the next computer in a line forming a complete circle. In this topology, if one PC fails, the whole network goes down. In case of ring topology, token ring system can be implemented i.e. if a system has a token then only it can transmit the data. The data is routed through different PCs to reach the destination system.
